Slowly crawling toward the end of June means the sun is up and is harsher than ever. While we needed this from the cold and drying winter and spring season, the excessive summer heat wave holds some serious consequences. Yes, that tan looks incredible on you, but are you cool and hydrated enough?
The crippling consequences of being exposed to too much heat are actual real things. A body that either produces or absorbs too much heat for prolonged periods of time can suffer from heatstroke or hyperthermia. We certainly do not want you to skip on that much-needed beach trip and tanning sesh so here are some tips on how to stay cool in the summer.
5 Ways to stay cool amidst the scorching summer heat
Drink plenty of water and electrolytes
This is an absolute no-brainer! The intense heat will surely have you sweating as a mechanism to help you cool down. As water and electrolytes find their way out of your body via perspiration, make sure to keep your body as hydrated as possible to prevent dehydration.
For this reason, we recommend that you not only consume loads of water but lots of electrolytes as well. Those energy drinks will do you lots of good during this sweaty season. To help you stay cool and fresh, here are the best hydrating drinks for summer.
Cool your quick-cooling spots
Areas where you feel your pulse are easier to cool because blood vessels are more superficial and are closer to the skin’s surface. By cooling those points through the application of ice or cool water, your body will be able to cool down relatively quickly.
Some of these “spots” are the sides of your neck, wrists, insides of elbows, knees & ankles, inner thighs, temples, and the spot just in front of the ear.
Stay out of the sun between 11 AM to 2 PM
The sun’s UV rays are at their strongest around 11 AM to 2 PM so it’s best to avoid going out during this time period. Reducing exposure during these hours can help tremendously in keeping your body in ideal temperatures.
But if it can't be helped and you really have to step out during this time, ensure that you observe other heat-protecting measures.
Dress accordingly
During the summer, reach out for loose, lightweight, and breathable clothes and footwear. The best fabric type to use during summer is cotton as it allows air to get through, keeping you cool and ventilated. Additionally, protect yourself from the harsh rays by putting on a hat and wearing some good ol’ shades.
Don’t forget your sunscreen!
Although you should wear your sunscreen all year round, you most especially do not want to skip putting it on during the summer season. This is to protect your skin from possible sun damage brought about by the UV rays.
Don’t forget to reapply sunscreen as well! Ideally, sunscreen should be reapplied every two hours for maximum protection. But if you’re outdoors and doing intense activities, it’s best to reapply every 80 minutes! Wanna learn more about the dos and don’ts of applying sunscreen? Click HERE!
Remember that no matter how excited and pleased you are that the sun is finally out and shining, you should still carefully observe the tips above for a fuss-free and fresh summertime!
