In lieu of National Eating Disorders Awareness Week, we would like to touch base on the importance of eating right toward our journey to holistic health. If you want to take your healthy eating journey to the next level, here are some good habits to start with.

5 tips toward holistic nutrition

Practicing holistic nutrition can take your life to a whole new level of enhanced physical and mental health. Here’s a guide you can follow to start your journey:

1. Opt for whole & raw foods

If you find yourself spending the most time in the processed food aisle in the grocery, you might have to reconsider your options. Excessive consumption of processed foods was found to be highly associated with obesity—a metabolic syndrome that leads to a legion of severe diseases.

To remedy this, shop for whole, raw organic meat, fruits, and vegetables. These are free from the abundant sugar and salt found in processed foods. Plus, going whole and raw holds higher nutritional value than anything you can find in the market.

2. Limit your sodium and sugar intake

The main reason why processed foods are not the healthiest option to consume is that they’re packed with sugar and sodium which, in excess, can be detrimental to one’s health. Reducing intake of both can significantly reduce one’s risk for stroke, metabolic diseases, and stroke.

Craving for something sweet? Reach out for those delicious fruits. Do you want something savory? Go get those whole, raw organic meat. The healthier options are absolutely endless!

3. Eat the good fats

Fats always get the bad rap, but it’s not always the case. As much as bad cholesterol is tremendously bad for you, consuming the good ones can bring you numerous benefits. Healthy fats, such as polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats, can reduce blood sugar and blood cholesterol levels.

Some common foods known to contain a great amount of healthy fats are dark chocolate, avocados, fish, nuts, whole eggs, and full-fat yogurt—all of which are actually really enjoyable to eat! Or if you want to up your game, you can even apply some on your skin. Try this easy homemade avocado mask to get those healthy fats in!

4. Stay hydrated!

Did you know that our bodies are made up of 60% water? This is how vital water is to life. Dehydration can lead to something as simple as a headache to something as severe as organ damage. Thus, always practice what they tell us since we were kids: get that eight glasses of water a day!

5. Practice portion control

There’s more to a balanced diet than the quality of your food. Quantity matters too! Too much of the good stuff may also be counterproductive. Overeating can cause discomfort such as heartburn, digestive tract issues, or sleep disturbances, among many others. Moreover, controlling your portions can help you maintain your weight which remains to be an important aspect of overall health.

The next time you grab that another slice of pizza, ask yourself: are you still hungry or just bored?
